About Totara North

A breathtaking view of Whangaroa Harbour from the air

The sheltered harbour of Whangaroa is a world renouned location and has acquired worthy mention in many sailing, boat building and fishing publications since before the turn of the century. Once the biggest boat building business in Australasia, Totara North once had a prominent timber mill and ship building yard established in 1872, owned by the local Lane & Brown families. In later years a thriving timber mill was operated by the Lane families but this too has ceased operation.

The Gum Store Bar & Grill, Totara North

The Totara North Bar & Grill, is worth a visit to see the various native timber panels installed when the historical building was restored some years ago. Also view the vast array of historical adornments on the walls while enjoying a drink / meal.

Unspoiled sheltered coves and spectacular scenery.

Diving on The Rainbow Warrior

Recreational fishing or sailing trips are also offered by local residents. Other activities include: diving on the Rainbow Warrior at Matauri Bay, a recognised diving destination with a thriving habitat for marine life, including some rare species.
